Two steps in the right direction on a long and winding road

1. Reduce medical expenditures from the current 15% or so of GDP back toward a goal of 1% by focusing on prevention – what the people can do to reduce medical costs.
2. Reduce the national debt by at least as much as new expenditures are going to cost – start by making other countries pay for all the freebies we are handing out.
3. Once those are achieved, replace our private medical insurance system with a single-payer (government-sponsored) program. Painful, doing the right thing is so painful.

Doing #3 right now would be insanely expensive and would add way too much to the debt.
