The importance of HCl in digestion. Yet another reason not to inhibit acid production.
The Cl- is almost as important as the acid (H+). The body could have used sulfuric acid to acidify the stomach contents (to denature proteins and activate pepsinogen), but CaSO4 is nowhere as soluble as the chloride salt.
Chloride converts all salts to highly soluble salts, as all known chloride salts are soluble. The downside: CdCl2, AlCl3, AsCl3, and so many salts like them are also soluble salts.
In particular, MgCl2, CaCl2, and FeCl2 are very soluble. This is critical for their eventual absorption. Not smart to shut off the HCl pump.
Without giving it a moment’s thought, doctors prescribe these proton pump blockers, and worse, the doctors advising FDA have allowed people to self-medicate with over-the-counter acid blockers. What are they thinking of?
