Autoimmunity is alloimmunity

Rule: autoantibodies are not recognizing wild-type structures.  They are recognizing altered structures on our own cells or in our own tissues or in our bodily fluids.

Thus, most autoantibodies are really alloantibodies.

“Altered structures” means a lot of things – it can be as simple as an over- isoprenylated membrane protein or as complex as a misfolded protein, one basically turned inside out and aggregated with other macromolecules.
