It is like arsenic. Each tiny dose doubles the effect.

That paraphrase is from the movie “Amazing Grace.”

Just saw “Twelve Years a Slave.”

Every time I see movies like this I am reminded that cruel slave owners and slave traders enthusiastically cited the Bible. Many verses in fact.

“The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.” (Merchant of Venice, I, iii)

And even today people are insanely passionate about their religion and anti-everyone-else’s-religion. The key word is insane.

Here are just three verses of many:

Leviticus 25:44-46 “Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.”

How can anyone be so cruel as to believe that this is the word of God? Today’s religious people are either inhuman or unconscious. Yesterday’s religious people who justified slavery were morally bankrupt. Will religion ever die? Will sense ever reign among men?

If the Jewish revelation is bogus – and if God’s endorsement of slavery does not prove it I don’t know what does – then since the Christian and Muslim holy books endorse this revelation, they are also bogus.
